Community forum set for Wednesday

Pamela A. Kisch, executive director of Fair Housing Center of Southeastern Michigan, and Jackson attorney Stephen D. Conley will be among the speakers at a Community Forum on Fair Housing and Civil Rights to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1 at the Jackson District Library, Carnegie Branch, 244 West Michigan Ave. The event is sponsored by Legal Services of South Central Michigan and Southeastern Dispute Resolution Services, and will include a panel of fair housing and civil rights experts to discuss fair housing and civil rights laws, local community concerns, and community resources. In addition to Kisch and Conley, speakers will include Michael Thompson, clinical director of Segue, Inc.; Tim Niyonsenga, a housing advocate with Area Agency on Aging; and Parrish Stahl, public relations and education specialist, DisAbility Connections. A yet-to-be-named representative from the NAACP will also be on the panel. Legal Services and Southeastern Dispute Resolution Services have collaborated to provide a new multi-layered service approach for landlord tenant cases in Judge Mazur's Court Room. With funding from the Jackson Community Foundation, these agencies have developed a pilot project to look at how mediation of specific types of landlord/tenant cases may speed up the court process, help stabilize the landlord/tenant relationship, and provide a balanced discussion, while still providing significant advocacy for cases which are not chosen for mediation. This project will also provide a series of community educational forums for the Jackson Community, covering a wide range of local topics of concern. To register, contact SDRS Executive Director, Marc Stanley at (517) 990-0279 or mstanley@ uwjackson.org. Published: Mon, Apr 29, 2013
