WLAMF contributes to Just the Beginning Foundation

The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation (WLAMF) is pleased to present a $1,000 contribution to the Just the Beginning Foundation High School Summer Legal Institute (JTBF), as part of its ongoing educational philanthropy. This contribution supports the week-long law program for metropolitan Detroit high school students that is overseen by U. S. District Judge Victoria Roberts and Cooley Auburn Hills Dean John Nussbaumer. Part of the “Motor City Pipeline” intended to increase diversity in the profession, the Institute links high school students with practicing lawyers, and trains them in lawyering skills such as oral argument and negotiation. 2013 marks the fourth year of the project, which has reached dozens of Detroit-area students.

“This project is a fantastic way to support the educational goals of these students,” said Dawn Van Hoek, Chair of the WLAM Foundation and a JTBF mentor during 2012. “The students gain an insider’s view of the legal system, and we gain a relationship with the next generation of advocates,” Van Hoek added. Judge Roberts observed, “We can see confidence build in these young adults over a short period of time. Part of our goal is to instill that confidence, and get students to understand that many of us — before our successes— were just like them.”
The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation has as its primary mission the support of educational opportunities for women, realized each year through scholarships to outstanding women law students at Michigan’s five law schools. The WLAMF is itself supported through generous contributions from law firms, corporations and individuals, including General Motors, the Albert & Doris Pitt Foundation, the Dickinson Wright Women’s Network, Bodman PLC, Sue Ellen Eisenberg & Associates, Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss PC, Kerr, Russell and Weber PLC Fund and the Culinary Challenge Committee.
