Wayne State University Law School Professor Paul Dubinsky will moderate a panel for the annual conference of the International Law Association in October in New York City.
The panel, one of more than 30 to take place during the conference from Oct. 25 to 27, is on “Advising Small- to Medium-Sized Foreign Companies.” Panelists will include Michael T. Cone, who is a partner at Fisher Broyles LLP in New York, a 1994 Wayne Law alumnus and a member of the External Advisory Committee for Wayne Law’s Program for International Legal Studies. William J. Kohler, a member of Clark Hill PLC in Detroit and chairman of its Internationalists Group, also will serve as a panelist, as will C. Peter Theut, president and CEO of China Bridge in Ann Arbor and a member of the External Advisory Committee for Wayne Law’s Program for International Legal Studies.
Dubinsky, director of graduate studies at Wayne Law, is vice president of the association’s American branch. He also serves on the Executive Editorial Board of the American Journal of Comparative Law and the U.S. Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law.
“The panel will focus on career opportunities in representing medium-sized foreign corporate clients and individuals,” Dubinsky said. “Assisting such clients often requires a lawyer to be knowledgeable about a broad array of issues because such clients may be reluctant to retain multiple law firms and they may not have needs typically addressed by highly specialized counsel. The panel will focus on the skills and knowledge needed to work with a client base that often is looking for a mixture of advice – legal, business and cultural.”
The conference, often considered the premier international law event of the fall season, has a theme this year of “Internationalization of Law and Legal Practice.”
The annual conference attracts an audience of more than a thousand attorneys, academics, diplomats, law students, foreign policy students, and people from government and business.
Among the chairs of the International Law Association committee working on the conference is David Stewart, visiting professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center, who serves on the Executive Committee of the American branch of the International Law Association and is a member of the External Advisory Committee for Wayne Law’s Program for International Legal Studies.
