Shawn Strand is a tax attorney with Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP. His practice focuses on advising clients regarding corporate and partnership taxation, mergers and acquisitions, tax-exempt entities, individual tax collection matters and taxation of captive insurance companies.
Strand graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in computer science and worked as a computer programmer for several years before graduating from the University of Michigan Law School.

What is your most treasured material possession? My house - I love home improvement projects.
What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Make sure you have the passion and drive necessary to excel because law school is not cheap.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be? I would likely be involved with technology and computers.
Favorite local hangouts: Jolly Pumpkin and The Earle.
What is your happiest childhood memory? Vacations with my parents at their cabin.
What would surprise people about your job? Tax work is actually very interesting and gratifying.
What’s your greatest achievement? My family – I have a beautiful wife and son.
What would you say to your 16-year-old self? Keep working hard and good things will happen. Also, sorry, you are done growing.
How tall were you then – and apparently now? I’m 5-foot-6 on a great day.
What one thing do you wish people knew about your work? It is better to involve a tax attorney sooner rather than later.
Favorite joke: What is an extroverted tax attorney? One who stares at your feet while he is talking to you.
What’s your favorite animal? My dog, Snoopy.
What word do you overuse? “So…”
What’s one thing you would like to learn to do? I’d like to learn how to play the piano.
What is something most people don't know about you? I was the drummer in a rock band after college and we headlined several shows at the Blind Pig.
Favorite movie: “Tombstone.”
What place won’t you return if you can help it? The emergency room.
What do you drive? What would you drive if money were no object? I drive a Chevy Cruze. If money were no object, I might look into a Tesla.
Favorite law-related movie: “A Few Good Men.”
Favorite place to spend money: Fingerle Lumber.
Where would you like to be when you're 90? On football Saturdays, I’d like to be in Ann Arbor. The rest of the time, anywhere close to my family would be great.
