A group of 12 Ukrainian higher educators came to visit Cooley’s Lansing Campus on Friday, November 15th. Professor Nancy Wonch acted as host, providing them with a demonstration of the technology used by Cooley Professors in the classroom and a tour of the campus. The group had many questions about higher education in the United States including:
• The interaction between universities and the private sector
• Knowledge testing and measurement of student’s academic achievements
• Information technologies used in teaching, and
• Preparing students for employment.
Their trip to the United States was sponsored by the Library of Congress, Open World Leadership Center which awards grants to a wide range of U.S.-based nonprofit and governmental organizations to host Open World delegations. The Center selects its host organizations annually through a competitive grants process conducted according to federal guidelines.
The host organization for this group was Friendship Force International (FFI) and Rotary International. FFI is a worldwide network of clubs (local chapters) and individuals that advance the mission of promoting global understanding across the barriers that separate people. FFI does this by connecting people from different countries at the personal level believing that when local hosts open their homes to visitors from other countries and cultures, true understanding can develop through the sharing of meals, conversation and the routines of daily life.
