Hon. Richard J. Garcia Appointed Chief Judge of Ingham Probate Court

 

 
Judge Richard J. Garcia, of Lansing, has been appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court as the Chief Judge of Ingham County Probate Court for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2014. Judge R. George Economy, the current Chief Judge, will serve as Chief until the end of the year and then will continue in the new year as a judge of the two-judge court.
 
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Michigan Law School, Judge Garcia has served on the Probate Court since his appointment by Governor John Engler in 2000. He was retained in November 2000 and re-elected in November 2002 and 2008. His term expires on January 1, 2015. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and earned his JD at the University of Michigan. 
 
He is active in the community having served on the Boards of several organizations including Farm Workers Legal Services, Cristo Rey Community Center, Community Corrections advisory Board, Big Brothers Big Sisters Community Advisory Board, Legal Aid of Central Michigan Board of Directors, East Lansing Housing Commission Vice Chair, Boys and Girls Club of Lansing Board of Directors, National Association of Human Rights Workers, Legal Aid of Central Michigan Board of Directors, Northwest Lansing Healthy Communities Initiative
Gilda's Club of Lansing Board of Directors, Cristo Rey Community Center Pro Bono Legal Services, and Mental Health Commission Children's Work Group.
 
Judge Garcia also teaches. He has been an Instructor Lansing Police Department Citizen Police Academy and an Adjunct Professor Cooley Law School, teaching Juvenile Law, Child Abuse and Neglect Children and the Law and Family Violence Practice 
 
He practiced with Howrey & Simon, Washington, DC and with Foster Swift Collins & Smith in Lansing. He was also a Partner with Adkins & Garcia and with Lynch, Gallagher, Lynch & Martineau, Lansing before taking the bench. 
 
Judge Garcia served as Chairman Michigan Civil Rights Commission, Co-Chair Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes and Chair Michigan Bias Crime Task Force.
