The future for the law firm of Hertz Schram is soaring – with the opening of a branch office in the 23-story skyscraper Chrysler House in Detroit’s downtown financial and judicial district. Symbolic of the strength and power of the city during its prime, this classic and historical architectural gem was renovated after being purchased in 2011 by Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and Bedrock Real Estate Services.
Hertz Schram was able to secure a short-term lease for its start-up office, providing flexibility to secure larger offices to move attorneys – and/or hire new ones – to work in the Detroit branch office.
These are fitting new “digs” for the Bloomfield Hills firm that has been flying high since its founding in 1979 by Brad Schram and Howard Hertz. Vic Norris joined the firm in 1981, becoming the firm’s managing partner in 1986. All three attended Detroit Public Schools; Hertz graduated from Cass Tech and Norris from Mumford High School. All three launched their careers in Detroit, with Norris and Schram at the Wayne Country Prosecutor’s Office, and Hertz in the Public Defender’s Office. Like other Hertz Schram attorneys, the trio has practiced in Detroit and Wayne County criminal courts, circuit courts, and federal courts their entire careers. Many of the firm’s senior partners are native Detroiters and grads of area high schools, colleges, and in some cases, law schools.
“Hertz Schram is coming full circle,” Norris says. “More than 35 years since our founders began their careers in Detroit, we’ve returned to the city where it all began and where it’s all beginning again.”
The firm and its attorneys are heavily involved in supporting local nonprofits, charity fund-raisers, and local events; and many of the attorneys serve on local boards and committees and have professional memberships in Detroit-area organizations. The firm has begun sponsoring a variety of events in downtown Detroit, and this past summer engaged in a Meet and Greet at the Fountain Bistro in Campus Martius Park, with many of the principals of Quicken Loans and Bedrock Real Estate Services.
A mid-sized law firm, Hertz Schram serves individuals and businesses in Detroit, Oakland County, Southeast Michigan, the Midwest, and across the country.
“Long-term client relationships resulted in us growing from a litigation boutique to a full-service firm with more than 30 attorneys capable of providing legal services in virtually every area of law,” Schram says. “Many of our clients have remained with our firm for 35 years.”
According to Norris, Hertz Schram is the story of constant reinvention – and like the City of Detroit, is looking for ways to grow and change, and be better as a result.
“We’re not revisiting the past, we’re re-inventing the future, adding years of practice and fresh talent with new ideas,” he says. “We haven’t walked away from who we are – to the contrary, we’re returning to it. Watch where we go from here.”
