Eight second-year law students have been elected to the 2014-15 Executive Board of a Wayne State University Law School publication, The Journal of Law in Society.

• Editor-in-Chief Steve Knox of Mount Clemens

• Managing Editor Erica Shell of Birmingham

• Public Relations/Business Editor Nadine Yousif of Orchard Lake Village

• Senior Note Editor Kimberly Grzic of Sterling Heights

• Executive Article Editor Melissa Kliemann of Ann Arbor

• Executive Article Editor Jillian Peterson of Detroit

Acting as the scholarly voice of the law school’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, The Journal of Law and Society provides discourse on the junctions of law and society. Each year, the journal identifies a range of issues affecting Detroit and other parts of the world and then publishes articles that address those issues within their social context. The journal is published twice a year and hosts an academic symposium each spring on topics relevant to the larger Detroit area.

This year’s symposium, “Forgotten from the Start: The Law’s Failing of the Urban Mentally Ill,” is set for Friday, March 21. Visit law.wayne.edu/journal2014 for more details.

The purpose of the journal is to build awareness about issues of concern and to make connections with scholars, jurists, legal practitioners, community organizations and students involved in researching, combating and solving these issues.

“The journal will provide an academic forum for the exploration of the social commitment involved with a career in law,” Knox said. “Through collaboration with the Keith Center and the Keith Students for Civil Rights, the incoming board members seek to create community in Detroit.”

The Journal of Law and Society is managed and edited by Wayne Law students with support from faculty advisor Peter Hammer, professor of law and director of the Keith Center. The incoming board will begin its tenure on the first Monday following the law school’s Commencement in May.
