Saginaw students help rebuild historic State Police Cruiser

In anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of the Michigan State Police (MSP) in 2017, students from the Saginaw Career Complex are assisting MSP department members and retirees to restore a 1957 Ford Custom 300 patrol car for display at events around the state.

The 1957 Ford Custom 300 was built specifically for police fleet needs by the Ford Motor Company. This particular model came with a re-designed body for safety and was the first to use seat belts as part of the safety package as standard equipment.  The 1957 model also coined the name “Police Interceptor” for the 312 cubic inch engine that was placed in the vehicle. A unique feature about this model is it was the last MSP patrol vehicle to use a flashing light on the roof before changing over to a rotating light.

This project is being led by MSP retiree, Sgt. Del Zimmerman. After obtaining the car from Texas, he began working with the Saginaw Career Complex Auto Body class. Many parts and services are being donated by local businesses.

Once complete, the vehicle will be trailered to various events around the state before becoming a permanent part of the MSP’s historical fleet. The fleet also includes a 1937 Ford, 1975 Plymouth Fury, 1991 Chevy Camaro, 1992 Ford Mustang, 1995 Chevy Caprice and a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria.

“The Michigan State Police looks forward to adding this important part of our history to our historical fleet,” said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP. “We are grateful for the leadership of retired Sgt. Del Zimmerman and the generosity of the school and its students and faculty to restore this patrol car to be enjoyed by people statewide at various public events.”

The MSP will mark its 100th Anniversary on April 19, 2017. For more information, visit www.michigan. gov/msp.
