WMU-Cooley Law School celebrated MLK Day with various events

 WMU-Cooley Law School’s Lansing campus hosted several events on Jan. 19 to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

The school’s Black Law Student Association hosted a short monologue by Gavin Lawrence from the play “Master Harold… and the boys,” set in apartheid South Africa, and a brief discussion on interracial relations and issues. 
The school also hosted a Michigan for Marriage open forum discussion on marriage equality, and students, faculty and staff volunteered at various nonprofit organizations in the Lansing area as well.
 “We feel it’s important for WMU-Cooley to suspend classes in order to celebrate the life of Dr. King and his work accordingly,” said Dr. Christopher Lewis, director of student services at WMU-Cooley. “Hosting discussions on racial tensions and inequalities help us all work toward creating awareness and ways to resolve these issues.”
To recognize King’s efforts to come together and support a greater cause, WMU-Cooley’s Student Diversity Committee coordinated a day of service for students, faculty and staff at the Greater Lansing Food Bank, Capital Area Humane Society, and Potter Park Zoo.  Now in its fifth year, nearly 100 individuals participated in the day of service.
