City of Detroit Group Executive of Human Rights and Ethics
TO SPEAK AT WLAM FOUNDATION RECEPTION
Wednesday, March 23rd
The WLAM Foundation is pleased to announce that this year’s Reception will feature speaker Portia L. Roberson, City of Detroit Group Executive of Human Rights and Ethics. The WLAM Foundation’s Reception is also the occasion to introduce the ten 2016 Outstanding Women Law Students chosen to receive a total of $30,000 in scholarships supporting their law school education. The awardees were selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership on women’s issues, through a competitive process.
The Foundation will also be awarding this year’s “Do Good Work Grant” winner: Student Advocacy Center of Michigan. SAC has been helping students in educational crisis for 40 years. They provide youth-driven, collaborative education advocacy and support, a statewide Student Rights Hotline, evidence-based mentoring and youth voice opportunities to fight school dropout and pushout, one of the most expensive social problems of our time. They are particularly focused on low-income students impacted by foster care, abuse and neglect, trauma, homelessness, mental illness, disabilities and harsh discipline policies.
2016 also marks the WLAM Foundation’s 20th year of making awards to deserving women law students. In that time, 235 awardees have received a total of $560,000 in financial support. The Foundation’s many corporate, law firm and individual donors have given generously to support the WLAMF’s educational mission, and many will also attend the March 23rd event. All in all, the Reception offers many reasons to celebrate.
The Awards Reception takes place at the Great Lakes Culinary Center in Southfield, from 5:30 to 7:30, at a suggested donation of $30 per attendee. The reception can also give local attorneys the opportunity to network with other lawyers and donors. The Great Lakes Culinary Center is located at 24101 West Nine Mile Road in Southfield. Please join the WLAM Foundation by registering for the event by March 18th: contact Barb at (248) 740-7003 to charge by phone, or charge online at www.wlamfoundation.orgwww.wlamfoundation.org.
The WLAM Foundation’s web site also offers opportunities to support the scholarship fund as a member of the Dean’s List, supporters at levels above $150. Virtually all donations go directly to scholarships, and they are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
