MSU Law to host 2016 Food Law Current Issues Seminar in July

The Michigan State University College of Law will host the 2016 Food Law Current Issues Seminar July 12-14 at the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development l in Lansing.

The seminar will provide education on current international, transnational, and national food law and policy.

An in-depth examination of the Food Safety Modernization Act will also take place, from understanding the implications of new regulations, to planning a comprehensive strategy for achieving its goals.

According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die each year from food-borne diseases.

The FSMA, signed into law in 2011 by President Barack Obama, provides the Food and Drug Administration with new enforcement authorities designed to achieve higher rates of prevention and better respond to problems that do occur.

The seminar’s keynote, “The Stage is Set for the Global Governance of Food,” will be presented by P. Vincent Hegarty, professor emeritus and founding director of the MSU Institute for Food Laws and Regulations.

Additional speakers will include attorneys from top defense and plaintiff’s law firms, in-house counsel for major multinational food companies, and experts from leading trade associations and MSU.

“We have assembled a deep and diverse panel of expertise for all three days of the seminar,” said Neal Fortin, director of the Global Food Law program and the Institute for Food Laws and Regulations.

“I look forward to a lively presentation and discussion on a variety of topics. Not only the Food Safety Modernization Act, but also managing risks and legal liabilities in globalized food chains, current issues in health claims and nutrition labeling, and food fraud and food counterfeiting.”

This seminar is designed for a global audience in food regulatory work, including industry regulatory affairs, quality assurance personnel, government officials, the legal community, advertising and marketing professionals, as well as academics and policymakers.
