Governor declares May as Missing Persons Awareness?Month
There are over 4,000 missing persons actively reported as missing in Michigan and almost 300 unsolved unidentified remains cases. In an effort to resolve these cases, the Michigan State Police (MSP) is hosting the 6th Annual “Missing in Michigan” event in Detroit on May 14.This year’s event will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters (1301 3rd Street, Detroit). It is free and open to the public.Members from the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System will be present to update their nationwide, searchable web database for missing persons and unidentified human remains. Family members are encouraged to bring photographs, dental records, medical records or other identifying information of their missing loved ones to update law enforcement databases.“This event brings together the families and loved ones of missing persons with law enforcement and members of the community to work together to get the answers and justice these missing people deserve,” said D/Sgt. Sarah Krebs of the MSP Missing Persons Coordination Unit. “These cases won’t go cold if we don’t let them.”
Child ID kits will also be provided free-of-charge and community organizations that help with missing person cases will be on site to provide information on child safety. Family and friends affected by the disappearance of a loved one will also be recognized at the event.
This is the sixth Missing in Michigan event and the third one to be held in Detroit. Previous locations included Flint, Grand Rapids and East Lansing. Over 60 missing person cases have been resolved thanks to previous events like this one.
In support of this effort and to further raise awareness of missing persons, Gov. Rick Snyder has declared May as Missing Persons Awareness Month.
Family members of missing persons who plan to attend should pre-register by contacting D/Sgt. Sarah Krebs at 313-215-0675 or KrebsS@ michigan.gov to ensure their loved one is commemorated at the event. A private roundtable discussion will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for anyone with a missing loved one.
