Hon. Jeffrey L. Sauter, who retired in late April, died May 25 at the age of 63. A memorial service was held June 3.
A Grayling native and a graduate of Central Michigan University and Cooley Law School, Sauter began his career in private practice in Charlotte and later became an assistant Eaton County prosecutor rising to the position of chief assistant prosecutor in 1985.
In 1987, he joined the Hubbard Law Firm in Lansing, focusing on civil litigation and employment law.
Appointed Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney in 1991, his accomplishments included creating the Economic Crimes Unit; forming the first paperless prosecuting attorney’s office in Michigan; and establishing the state’s first sobriety court.
Named to the Eaton County Circuit Court bench in May 2013 he was part of a team that established the Eaton County Veterans Treatment Court.
Sauter served on the board of directors of the Association of Drug Court Professionals; was a member of Drug Court Professionals; served on the Statewide Drug Treatment Court Advisory Committee; and served as president of the Prosecutors Attorneys Association of Michigan, as well as in other positions within the association. He received PAAM’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 2001, and PAAM’s Frank J. Kelley Justice Award in 2013.
