Daniel J. DuChene is an associate with Barr, Anhut & Associates, P.C. in Ypsilanti. He was hired as an attorney after being admitted to the bar in 2013, having spent several years as a clerk with the firm before that.
DuChene graduated from Cooley Law School in May 2013 after working as a student attorney for the Washtenaw County Public Defender’s Office, a judicial intern for 14A District Court Judge Cedric Simpson, and a legal intern for a medical device manufacturer.
He now enjoys his work in municipal law, criminal defense and prosecution, family law, and contract law.
He also teaches a course on law and ethics for the Journalism Department at Eastern Michigan University.
Before attending law school, he was a community journalist and publisher in the Ypsilanti area.

What would surprise people about your job? How interesting it is.
What is your most treasured material possession? A friend of mine gave me a poster he had autographed by (musician) George Clinton. It may be the coolest thing I own.
Favorite local hangouts: Red Rock Barbeque and the Corner Brewery in Ypsi. Connor O’Neill’s in Ann Arbor.
Favorite websites: I mostly visit local news sites and Facebook.
What do you wish someone would invent? A time machine, so long as its use does not result in a paradox.
Who is on your guest list for the ideal dinner party? Friends and family that I do not get to see often.
If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? (Detroit Tigers analyst) Rod Allen.
What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
What is your proudest moment as a lawyer? I enjoy my work for municipal clients. My proudest moments are when my work has a positive effect on the community.
How did you earn your first dollar? Camp counselor at Lost Lake Scout Reservation in Clare County.
Who inspires you, and why? I draw inspiration from wherever I can get it. Personally, my wife and parents inspire me the most. But an article I read about a complete stranger could also impact me.
How do you relax? Take in a baseball game or play the guitar.
What is one thing you would like to learn? To play the banjo.
What is something most people don't know about you? I have yet to beat the first Super Mario Brothers video game. But not for lack of trying.
What is the best advice you ever received? “If the world were perfect, it wouldn’t be.” – Yogi Berra
If you can help it, where will you never return? A bar examination.
Favorite place to spend money: To travel.
What is your motto? “Be prepared.”
