Monday Profile: Aaron D. Cox

Attorney and counselor at law Aaron D. Cox attended New Boston Huron High School in New Boston, and then Madonna University in Livonia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies, magna cum laude.

He was also a three-year captain of the men’s basketball team.

After graduation, he enrolled at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, earning his J.D., magna cum laude, in two years.

A member of the Moot Court Board, he focused his legal studies on litigation.

Immediately after graduation, he opened his own firm – The Law Offices of Aaron D. Cox, PLLC,  where he serves as president and founder. He has been operating that office in Taylor for the last 10 years.

The office is a niche firm that focuses on clients rather than a specific area of law. The staff serves the needs of property management companies, landlords, and owners/investors in real estate in Michigan. The vast majority of legal services to those clients centers around performing eviction and collection work for them. Staff also handle all types of real-estate and contract litigation and perform business and estate planning for clients.

Cox, who was Voted a Rising Star, Top Attorney in Michigan by Super Lawyers in 2012 and 2013, also serves as general legal counsel for Garner Properties &?Management LLC.

Cox is a past president of the Rotary Club of Taylor, and a past president of the Downriver Bar Association.

He and his wife have two daughters.

What would surprise people about your job?
Attorneys? Not much. Everyone else? We work extremely hard to service our clients. My typical work week is 55-60 hours and I get to be an attorney, marketing expert, accountant, and handyman all at the same time. Being an attorney is not all porches and mansions; the vast majority of us work very hard for modest pay.

What is your most treasured material possession?
Nothing, I don’t treasure material items, just my family.

What is your proudest moment as a lawyer?
Every day that I assist my clients in achieving their goals is a proud day for me. Generally speaking I’m proud about being an attorney every day because this is an extremely honorable profession filled with amazing people.

What are your favorite local hangouts? Taking the kids to the Detroit Zoo.

What are you better at than everyone else you know? I’m adept at problem solving and getting favorable resolutions for my clients.

What is your “Must-see” TV show? The Walking Dead.

Name three things you can’t live without: Wife, kids, exercise.

What is your favorite charity, and why? The Woodworth-Cox Scholarship fund. A great friend of mine – James Woodworth who works for Quicken Loans – and I started a scholarship for basketball players at Madonna University a number of years ago. Madonna is a private school and isn’t cheap. It also doesn’t always provide significant resources to its athletic programs. James and I know this all too well since we both played there and we wanted to use our successes to give back to those going through the struggles of being a student athlete at Madonna. We have raised nearly $50,000 to date and hope to double that in the coming years.

What is one thing you would like to learn to do?
Speak a foreign language.

What is the best advice you ever received?
It takes a lifetime to build a reputation but only a moment to destroy one.

What are your words of advice for aspiring attorneys?
Work hard, be honorable, and treat the profession with the respect it deserves.
