Michigan Lawyers Weekly, a news publication serving the state’s legal industry, has named Plunkett Cooney attorney Carolyn M. Jereck as one of its 2016 “Women in the Law.”
For 14 years, Jereck has served as a Department Leader at Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms. She is also the first female to hold the position, and her impact hasn’t gone unnoticed by colleagues.
“Carolyn is an outstanding attorney and leader. Truth be known, she’s a pioneer here at the firm,” said Dennis G. Cowan, Plunkett Cooney’s President and CEO. “She has provided steady leadership for over a decade. She’s been a tremendous influence on the strategic direction of the firm, and I’m privileged to have her as part of our management team.”
The 2016 Women in the Law honorees will be recognized by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in a special section of the publication distributed in September that coincides with awards luncheon on Sept. 15 at the Detroit Marriott in Troy. Jereck will be among 30 women honored at the luncheon, and one member of the class of 2016 will be selected as the “Woman of the Year.”
The Michigan Lawyers Weekly editorial staff selected this year’s honorees, considering a number of criteria, including each nominee’s commitment to excellence in the practice of law; inspiration and accomplishments as leaders in the profession; mentorship of other women; and significant contribution of time and effort to volunteerism and/or pro bono service.
Jereck is a member of the Plunkett Cooney’s Litigation and Labor and Employment practice groups. She is also a founding member of the firm’s Women’s Leadership Committee. She concentrates her practice in the areas of employment law, retail liability, premises liability, loss prevention litigation, liquor liability and product liability.
A recipient of Martindale-Hubbell’s highest rating-AV Preeminent™ Peer Review rating, Jereck is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association, the Litigation Section and Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program of the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, The Association of Trial Defense Counsel and the Employment Subcommittee of the DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar.
Jereck received her law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1988 and her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1985.
Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney employs over 140 attorneys in nine Michigan cities, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm, which provides a range of transactional, insurance coverage and litigation services, has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell and has been listed among the U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2016.
