In memoriam James Levon Hopewell
1967-2016
James Levon Hopewell was born July 15, 1967 in Grand Rapids, to William Hopewell II and Dorothy Dean Donaldson. He was employed with Steelcase, Inc. as Assistant General Counsel.
He is a graduate of Grand Rapids City College, Adrian College, and Syracuse University, where he took his MBA?in Corporate Finance. He received Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
Prior to starting at Steelcase in 2014, Hopewell was Associate General Counsel and then Vice President Legal Services-Associate General Counsel at Herman Miller, Inc., and before that, a partner at Miller Johnson. He started his legal career off in 2001 as Senior Corporate Counsel at Meijer, Inc.
He volunteered his time with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Art Works!, Arbor Circle/The Bridge for Homeless Youth, and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Foundation. He also served as Chair of the Grand Rapids Bar Association Summer Minority Clerkship Program. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar, and GRBA as well as the Floyd Skinner Bar.
James Hopewell was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Donaldson and father, William Phillip Hopewell. He leaves to cherish his loving memories a wife, Kishna Hopewell, and two daughters, Jamison and Kendall. He also leaves three brothers, Phillip Hopewell III of Kalamazoo, Earl Hopewell (Nicole) of Chicago, and Artis Hopewell (Charlene) of Fort Lauderdale; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
In accordance with his wishes, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you give a donation in his name to the Youth Commonwealth or the Grand Rapids Urban League.
