Famed civil rights attorney Morris Dees will be the keynote speaker at Michigan Coalition for Human Rights dinner set for April 30

Morris Dees, renowned civil rights attorney and founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will be keynote speaker at the 2017 annual dinner of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights.

The event begins with a 4 p.m. reception, with dinner at 5 p.m., on April 30 at Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit.

Dees formed the Southern Poverty Law Center in 1971 to help cement the gains of the civil rights movement and end the vestiges of Jim Crow segregation in the Deep South. The SPLC is internationally known for tracking activities of white supremacists and other hate groups.

The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights will present four awards at the dinner:

• Bishop Coleman H. McGehee Jr. Champion of Justice Award: Morris Dees for his nearly 50 years of tireless human and civil rights advocacy and the promotion of acceptance and tolerance.

• Lifetime Activist Achievement Award: Dr. Gloria House, retired director of African American Studies Department at University of Michigan, for her decades of activism.

• Organizational Activist Award: American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan for its dedicated legal advocacy for Flint citizens victimized by the water crisis; efforts on behalf of immigrant rights; education reform initiatives in Detroit; and advocacy and support for LGBT equality.

• Community Activism Award: Campaign to Take on Hate led by the National Network for Arab American Communities.

Tickets for the dinner cost $60, or $100 for dinner and reception with Morris Dees.
