Get to Know Daniel Cherrin

An alumnus of Michigan State University College of Law, Daniel Cherrin is the founder and CEO of North Coast Strategies and a partner with M10 Marketing, an integrated marketing agency.

Through advocacy, collaboration, and strategic relationships, he has built a successful career as an attorney, lobbyist, and public relations professional.

Cherrin’s professional experience includes serving as the Communications Director for the City of Detroit and press secretary to the Mayor of Detroit, as a federal lobbyist for the Detroit Regional Chamber, and as the owner of an independent public affairs consultancy.

Over the past 18 years, he has worked on a number of high-profile public relations issues, advising university presidents, mayors, CEOs, and others.

Cherrin earned his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Michigan, and earned a certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University School of Law, The Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution.

What would surprise people about your job?
While I am an attorney, my practice centers around strategic communications, crisis management and stakeholder engagement.

Why did you become a lawyer?
I really became a lawyer to become a lobbyist and help make an impact by influencing public policy.

What’s your favorite law-related TV show, movie, and/or book? Now: “Designated Survivor.” Then: “Paper Chase.’

Who are your law role models – real and/or fictional?
Rick Weiner, Richard McLellan, Judy Smith/Olivia Pope, Lanny Davis.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? The President of United States.

What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Bring with you an open mind but an idea of what you want to do after your graduate, and #GoForIt!

What’s your proudest moment as a lawyer?
Assisting the president of the University of Toledo after a nurse accidently threw away a kidney during an active transplant surgery, minimizing any negative impact with the patient and the University’s reputation.

What do you do to relax? Hang out with my children or run.

What other career path might you have chosen?
I am doing exactly what I wanted to do.

What would you say to your 16-year-old self?
Enjoy yourself, stay focused and never burn a bridge.

What is your happiest childhood memory? Being able to bike around my neighborhood (Southfield) going from friend’s house to friend’s house until late at night.

What is your most treasured material possession? None, but I cherish the memories I create with my children.

What do you wish someone would invent? I can’t say because I want to be the first to invent it!

What has been your favorite year so far and why? Too hard to have just one: 2000 (married), 2003 (child 1), 2004 (child 2), 2006 (child 3).

What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? Israel.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?
The ability to read someone’s mind.

What’s one thing you would like to learn to do?
Play guitar (and ukulele).

What is something most people don't know about you?
I am pretty transparent – no secrets here!

If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be?
Just three, I would continue to have dinner with my children (and if I am allowed a fourth, my wife) – I am a family guy!

What’s the best advice you ever received? My first job as a lawyer was with a no fault litigation firm. A colleague came up to me and said, “No matter what you do, find another area that you enjoy or are passionate about, learn it and develop a niche.”  A few weeks later, I left that law practice to become the Federal Lobbyist for the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Favorite place to spend money: My children’s school – best investment ever.

What is your motto? I have two: Now, Let’s Start The Conversation! and Relationships Matter!

Which living person do you most admire?
My three children.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
My three children.

What is the most unusual thing you have done?
I went canyoning in the Swiss Alps.
