A January 16 ribbon-cutting served as the launch pad for the new Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Clinic at the U.S. District Court in Detroit. The clinic, which opened officially the following day, is a partnership between University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and is designed to aid hundreds of low-income litigants who represent themselves in lawsuits before the federal court each year. The clinic, according to Detroit Mercy Law Clinical Director Anne Yantus, will operate three half-days each week with a staff attorney and eight law students, providing limited-scope legal assistance to pro se litigants who may need help determining whether to file a suit or who need procedural advice, explanation of court orders and procedures, strategy discussions, and more. Pictured at the ribbon-cutting event were: (l-r) U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts; U.S. Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen; Anne Yantus of Detroit Mercy Law; attorney Kevin Carlson; Denise Page Hood, chief judge of the U.S. District Court; Court Administrator David Weaver; U.S. District Judge Laurie Michelson; U.S. District Judge Terry Berg; and Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker.
