Musically Inclined

The Michigan Chapter of Guitars Not Guns on May 10 celebrated the graduation of five teens held in secure placement at the Lincoln Center in Highland Park. The five grads completed their guitar class as taught by community volunteers and were awarded their certificates and guitars as donated by Walk the Beat, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing instruments, opportunities and lessons for kids regardless of their economic backgrounds. All graduates will be certified to “Rock On” ad infinitum, according to Judge Frank Szymanski of the Wayne County Circuit Court Juvenile Division. Guitars Not Guns has 19 chapters across the U.S., and provides “guitars and lessons to foster children and at-risk youth in a classroom setting with qualified teachers as an alternative to violence.” Judge Szymanski, who also is a musician in his spare time, is pictured (second from left) with (l-r) guitar instructor Ron Jones, Lincoln Center Director Oliver Cooper of Spectrum Juvenile Justice, and guitar instructor Al Bettis.
