Golden Anniversary

Current and former judges of the Ingham County 55th District Court enjoyed a June 18 celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of Michigan’s district court system. (l-r) Hon. Robert Holmes Bell (1973-1978), Hon. Thomas E. Brennan (1981-2004), Hon. Pamela J. McCabe (1988-2005), Hon. Rosemarie E. Aquilina (2005-2008), Hon. Thomas P. Boyd (2005 - current), and Hon. Donald Allen, Jr. (2009- current).
Often referred to as “The People’s Court,” district courts have exclusive jurisdiction over all civil claims for damages up to $25,000, including small claims, landlord-tenant disputes, land contract disputes, and civil infractions such as minor traffic matters, speeding, failure to stop or yield, careless driving, and equipment and parking violations. The courts, that can also conduct marriages, handle a wide range of criminal proceedings, and can also conduct preliminary examinations in felony cases.
