Attorney and community leader Erane C. Washington has announced her candidacy for the 14B District Court Judge, running for the seat being vacated by Judge Charles Pope, retiring at the end of the year.
Washington earned her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and her law degree from the University of Michigan.
She grew up in Washtenaw County and has lived in Ypsilanti Township with her husband Anthony for 26 years.
She is also a proud Lincoln Railsplitter parent of her now two adult children. She and her husband are members of Christian Tabernacle Church.
Washington served for seven years as an assistant public defender and another six years as a judicial attorney to Washtenaw County Circuit Court Judge Donald Shelton, where she handled high volume and high profile civil and criminal cases on a daily basis.
Washington is the principal and founder of the Law Firm of Erane C. Washington-Kendrick, which provides legal services to businesses and individuals in contract disputes, business, real estate, commercial litigation and probate matters, as well as serving indigent individuals, both adult and juvenile, throughout Washtenaw County. She is also a certified mediator as well as an approved arbitrator for the financial regulatory industry. In these capacities, Washington represents a broad spectrum of individuals with legal needs, including many who are low-income and underprivileged.
Washington was elected by her peers to the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners, representing both Washtenaw and Jackson Counties.
She previously served as president of the Washtenaw County Bar Association and as co-chair of the Judiciary Committee and the Race, Gender and Bias Awareness Committee. She also proudly serves as treasurer for the Washtenaw Region of the Women Lawyers Association and as a board member on the state-wide board for Women Lawyers.
Washington is an active volunteer having served on the Board of Directors for Huron Valley Habitat for Humanity, the Huron Valley Girl Scouts of America and the American Red Cross.
She was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm to the State Board of Canvassers and the State Officer's Compensation Commission.
