Hazel Park Magistrate Nadine Hatten this week announced her candidacy for Oakland County Circuit judge. Hatten is running to succeed Judge James Alexander, who is scheduled to retire later this year.
Hatten, a graduate of Rochester High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and her Teaching Certificate from the University of Michigan. During her 15-year teaching tenure, Hatten was named “Teacher of the Year” by Fox 2 News Detroit.
While teaching, Hatten received her master’s degree in Educational Administration from Wayne State University, and her law degree from Wayne State University Law School. After earning her J.D., Hatten obtained her LL.M. in Criminal Defense from California Western School of Law. Hatten is a graduate of the National Criminal Defense College, a member of the Oakland County Bar Association, and a board member for Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM). She also was sworn in to the United States Supreme Court.
“I was raised in a United Automobile Workers (UAW) family,” said Hatten. “Their hard work and perseverance made me who I am today. I learned how to pull myself up by my bootstraps, and I worked hard to achieve my goals. That meant attending law school at night while working full time.
“I’m the ?rst and only person to earn a college degree from my mother’s side of the family,” Hatten noted. “I’m the ?rst and only person in my family to work as a teacher. And I’m the ?rst and only person in my family to become an attorney.”
As an educator, Hatten guided and prepared students for their future. Similarly, as an attorney, she used her legal knowledge to guide and to prepare clients for their futures. In both roles, Hatten advocated for families and, in particular, for children. In 2017, the Oakland Circuit Court (Family Division) honored Hatten with the coveted Sandra Silver Advocate for Children Award.
As a candidate for Circuit Court judge, Hatten will work with schools to take part in the state reading initiative and plans to attend community events to hear from residents.
“I look forward to serving all the residents of Oakland County,” Hatten said.
