Genesee County Bar Foundation administers more than $1.4 million

By Francine Cullari

The Genesee County Bar Foundation (GCBF) was established in 1988 to support worthy projects which improve the administration of justice, promote the study of law and the continuing education of lawyers, educate the public about its legal rights and obligations, and maintain the honor and integrity of the profession. The Foundation was the brainchild of some of the finest attorneys in Genesee County at the time.
The first president was Allan L. Parker, whose son Patric has followed in his father’s footsteps as a board member today. Its first female member was Kathleen Buckley.

From initial founding memorial contributions, donations and investment growth have led to a fund balance of more than $1.4 million. The original donors were Charles D. Beagle, whose son Duncan is a Circuit Court judge and current president of the board, Roy E. Brownell, Robert A. Collins, Arthur C. Elliott and his son Hon. Phillip A. Elliot, Marvin Ransom, father of Hon. Robert Ransom, and Reese W. Stipes.

The Foundation sponsors many projects, including the Louis D. MacGregor Fund for the continuing legal education of attorneys; the Earl J. Cline Fund to support networking, educational and social activities for young lawyers; the John S. Beagle Scholarship for ABA-accredited law school students from Genesee County; the Neithercut Fund for continuing legal education of GCBA members who are either sole practitioners or members of law firms;  the Annual Holiday Dinner Fund to feed the less fortunate of our community, initiated and perpetuated by Brian Barkey for more than 20 years;  the Endowment Fund for the preservation of the Foundation; and unrestricted funds to support community-based activities such as Law Day, Senior Outreach, and Teens and The Law.
