As of June 28, the 30th Circuit Court and Ingham County Probate Court lift all COVID public health restrictions for employees and public coming to court facilities to use court services. And as of July 1, new Michigan Supreme Court rules protecting personal identifying information, which will impact what information can be on court filings and copies of records, go into effect.
• Face coverings and social distancing will not be required of any court employee or public; however, anyone is welcome to wear a face covering if desired.
• COVID health screening of the public at the entrance to court facilities will be discontinued.
• A greater percentage of court proceedings will be conducted in person.
• Several court services will either return to in-person or such a move will be considered; relevant services include:
• Home visits and in-court meetings conducted by the Juvenile Division;
• Monitoring of those on release pending a criminal trial;
• Outreach programs including the Friend of the Court’s Focus on the Children and the Probate Court’s Fiduciary Classes.
Beginning July 1, far-reaching court rules designed to protect personal identifying information (PII) go into effect. PII for any person includes date of birth, Social Security Number, Driver’s License Number, Passport Number, and any financial account numbers. Scores of Supreme-Court-approved court forms have been recently updated either to remove PII from older versions of the forms or necessitate additional confidential forms to be filed. Those accessing the courts on July 1 or after may be asked to ensure updated mandated procedures are followed.
As of July 1, email filings will no longer be accepted in the Probate Court. And Circuit Court operations in the Mason Courthouse, closed for several months due to the pandemic, are set to resume July 6.
