Lansing Food Bank seeks help to address hunger needs

By Mike Farrell

Food challenges, a/k/a hunger, impact literally thousands of residents in Mid-Michigan communities. Children, senior citizens, veterans, citizens who are disabled or on a fixed income and the unemployed – including those whose manufacturing plants have been placed on shutdown – require food assistance.

Getting enough to eat is often a "hand to mouth" operation for those individuals, even those who qualify for Bridge cards or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).

The Greater Lansing Food Bank is a nonprofit organization which provides emergency food assistance to needy families and individuals. Heavily reliant on volunteers, the Food Bank makes food available at food pantries and mobile distribution sites in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Shiawassee Gratiot, Isabella, and Clare counties.

For many, "food insecurity" is more than a mere concept. It is reality. Not surprisingly, food shortages ... food emergencies ... have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Food insecurity is more than an amorphous concept for countless numbers of our neighbors. While federal programs for student meals, such as free or reduced lunch, are available through public schools, standing alone they don't get the job done. It is noteworthy that all communities and school districts, regardless of per capita income, are not immune from students and families impacted by homelessness and hunger.

While for members of the legal community a recurring question that may surface from time-to-time in a household is "at which restaurant should we eat" or "from which restaurant should we order takeout” – that dilemma is not part of the landscape for many. Rather, hunger emergencies reflect reality – trying to find enough food to start the day – to make it through the day.

As Thanksgiving approaches, please take this opportunity to grab the contribution envelope enclosed with this issue for a tax deductible donation and send a check along to the "Greater Lansing Food Bank." Join the ongoing fight against hunger.

While each and every contribution is welcome, please note that no contribution is too large.

Thanks for participating.
