Freedom Tour is slated for June 20-July 1, 2022

The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights (MCHR) has announced that applications are open for its 2022 Freedom Tour that will take a group of Michigan high school students from different races, national origins, religions, socio-economic backgrounds, and sexual orientation on a 12-day educational bus tour through the Deep South. The trip will expose students to the rich history of the U.S. civil rights movement, including landmarks, critical events, and discussions with civil rights activists.

The Tour will be the seventh time the group has sponsored a bus trip for Michigan high school students to visit the historic sites of the movement, gain first-hand experience about the long struggle for justice, and
walk in the footsteps of the legendary civil rights activists who led the movement.

Scheduled for June 20-July 1, the itinerary includes the following attractions:

  • Georgia – The King Center and historic Ebenezer Baptist Church
  • Alabama – Birmingham Civil Rights Center, Southern Poverty Law Center/Civil Rights Memorial Center and National Voting Rights Museum & Institute
  • Mississippi – Viola Liuzzo Memorial Marker, Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Choctaw Reservation
  • Tennessee – National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel
  • Kentucky – Berea College

“We’re excited about this summer’s Freedom Tour and, just as our previous trips, this excursion will provide an extraordinary, first-hand, educational opportunity for Michigan high school students to learn and experience the history of our country’s civil rights movement and how it continues to this day. The trip is a transformative experience for the youth who return inspired to do impactful social justice work in their communities and beyond,” said Cary McGehee, long-time chair of MCHR and a founding partner of Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonnani & Rivers, a civil rights law firm in Royal Oak.
