Commemorating of National Mentoring Month and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

In commemoration of National Mentoring Month and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County hosts its 16th Annual Mentoring Inspiration Celebration.

The purpose of the Annual Mentoring Inspiration Celebration is to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy through the promotion of mentorship and service in our community.

The virtual event will take place via Zoom on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Monday, January 17th, 2022, beginning at 9:00am.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Kent D. Key, who is a Health Equity and Community Engaged Research Scholar, and faculty at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in the Division of Public Health. As a Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities Researcher, Dr. Key specializes in Community Engaged Research approaches and methodologies.

Dr.  Key, a long-time resident of Flint, MI, has been actively engaged in community academic partnered research for over a decade. He is a scholar-practitioner bridging both academia and community together to create equitable collaborative relationships in research, and has worked on national, regional, and local levels.

Dr. Key is a partner with a Mentoring Collaborative established during the pandemic to strengthen mentoring at a time when youth and families needed us the most. Partners include Big Brothers Big Sisters, MSU Public Health Academy,
Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha sororities and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, President of Mott Community College, will serve as Master of Ceremony, and one of our Voices of Potential, Little Brother Ashton, will share his experiences as a mentee and his excitement as he heads to Morehouse College, Dr. King’s alma mater.   Admission for the event is free to the public. Advanced registration is requested. Donations for the event are welcomed.
