The Flint River Watershed Coalition (FRWC) welcomes Jennifer Raymond as their new Executive Director, as well as six additional board members from their recently dissolved Corridor Alliance Chapter.
“I am excited about the new energy and perspectives that Jennifer will bring and how we work together with dedicated board members: those new to the role, as well as those who are continuing to serve,” reflected Doug Schultz, FRWC Board of Directors Chair.
When Raymond’s tenure begins December 7, she will manage day-to-day operations for the Flint River’s environmental organization, known for its paddle, education and water monitoring programs. Raymond will also lead fundraising, strategic partnerships, and community engagement initiatives, including the FRWC’s response to the Lockhart Chemical spill that began on June 15, 2022.
Raymond brings over a decade of non-profit experience to the role, including administrative roles in domestic violence crisis shelter services and USDA Commodity Food programming. As a life-long resident of the Great Lakes bioregion, she has been a passionate participant in many projects promoting water quality, including the Chippewa River Water Festival. Raymond holds a B.S. from Ferris State University, and in 2016 received a Leadership Institute Certification from the Michigan Community Action Association. When she’s not at work, she enjoys kayaking, vegetable gardening (especially hot peppers), and 80’s horror movies.
Raymond succeeds Interim Executive Director Sarah Scheitler, who was appointed to the role in August 2022, and previously served as Corridor Alliance Manager with FRWC. Scheitler is moving on to a role with the State of Michigan.
The Corridor Alliance Chapter of FRWC, which was founded in 2007 and became a chapter of FRWC in 2018, focused its work exclusively within the city of Flint. The Chapter’s board voted to dissolve last month with a goal of strengthening the overall leadership and focus of its parent organization. Six former board members from the Corridor Alliance Chapter have joined FRWC’s board of directors, bringing significant Flint connections and talent to the organization’s leadership team:
• Tiffany Bernethy, Commercial Loan Officer with Metro Community Development
• Kathleen Gazall, Flint resident
• Michelle Kachelski, Neighborhood Project Assistant with the Neighborhood Engagement Hub
• Paula Nas, Director of the University of Michigan-Flint’s Office of Economic Development
• Tom Saxton, Flint resident, President of Mott Park Recreation Association
• Juan Zuniga, Executive Director of Flint LISC
“I want to extend a big welcome FRWC’s new executive director, Jennifer, and offer thanks to the former Corridor Alliance board members and Sarah for their years of hard work,” said Kathleen Gazall, former Chair of the Corridor Alliance Chapter, and current FRWC board member, “All of these changes strengthen and bring vibrancy to the organization. We are super excited for 2023 and beyond.”
