For 35 years, Detroiters have gathered during the month of February at the request of federal Judge Damon J. Keith to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans to the nation’s history. This year’s 35th Annual Damon J. Keith Soul Food Luncheon returned in person for the first time since the judge’s passing in 2019 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The luncheon was presented by the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School and the family of Keith Clerks on Tuesday, February 14, at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. Every year, a local Detroiter who has made an outstanding contribution to the African American community is bestowed with the Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award. This year’s celebration continued that tradition by honoring Janet Webster Jones (second from left), a lifelong Detroiter and owner of Source Booksellers. Among those congratulating Jones at the event were (l-r) Peter J. Hammer, director of the Damon J. Keith Center; retired Detroit news anchor Huel Perkins; U.S. District Court Chief Judge Sean Cox, Eastern District of Michigan; and Butch Hollowell of The Miller Law Firm Detroit. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, one of Keith’s former law clerks, was the keynote speaker for this year’s event.
