The 5th Annual Shapero Cup Moot Court Competition and Symposium took place Monday, February 20. The competition was held in courtrooms at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and the symposium was held at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Raymond M. Kethledge, Sixth Circuit, and Bankruptcy Court judges from throughout Michigan and northern Ohio participated, as well as attorneys from the Detroit Metropolitan area. Teams of law students from law schools in Michigan, Kansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee competed. After the competition, experienced attorneys conducted a demonstration argument on the same fact pattern for the law students to observe. Participants in the demonstration argument were (left to right) U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Lisa Gretchko, Eastern District of Michigan; Charles Bullock, Stevenson & Bullock PLC; and Jill Gies, U.S. Dept. of Justice Office of the U.S. Trustee. The Shapero Cup Moot Court Competition and Symposium are named in honor of retired Bankruptcy Judge Walter Shapero for his many years of outstanding service as a bankruptcy judge.
