2023 One Voice Michigan Pet Alliance Conference & Expo

Animal welfare advocates convene September 2023 in Grand Rapids

The Michigan Pet Alliance (MPA) biennial animal welfare conference is back, assembling leaders and visionaries to share the latest research and best practices in animal welfare.

After a five-year hiatus following the cancellation of the 2020 conference and the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 One Voice Michigan Pet Alliance Conference & Expo is Sept. 21-22 in Grand Rapids.

More than 300 staff, volunteers, and advocates from animal welfare organizations, shelters and rescues from across Michigan will gather for the two-day event to learn the latest best practices, what’s new and what’s next in animal welfare.

“The theme of this year’s conference is Better Together,” said Deborah Schutt, chair of the Michigan Pet Alliance. “After five years, hundreds of animal welfare professionals and advocates will be in the same location – together – with the same goal of improving standards and quality of care for the animals who need us.

“Our conferences have always been filled with an energy that lifts the most dampened spirit and sends folks home ready to move mountains. I expect this year’s conference to blow the roof right off and generate record-breaking energy to move multiple mountains.”

The in-person event at the Sheraton Grand Rapids Airport Hotel will include ample networking opportunities for participants to engage with each other, as well as with our subject matter experts and exhibitors, and to share ideas and experiences. Continuing education credits are also available.

Keynote presentations will be delivered by Dr. Marty Becker, founder of Fear Free®, and Denise Evans, a leader of ideas on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Breakout tracks include:

• People Power!

• Pet Health & Wellness

• Best Practices in Shelters & Rescues

• Community & Communication

“I look forward to attending and presenting a session about community outreach at this year’s conference,” said Jen Clarkson, Dog Aide, Detroit. “It’s a chance to share ideas and programs that save lives and to talk to my colleagues across the state as we all learn more about the latest and greatest in all areas of our field.”

This year’s One Voice conference features 20 breakout sessions with more than 30 subject matter experts, 30 exhibitors, tours of two area animal shelters, and Ask the Experts roundtables plus raffles, prizes and giveaways. For those who can’t attend in person, four general session presentations will be streamed live over the two days. Register by June 4 to take advantage of early registration pricing.

MPA is offering up to 10 scholarships to reduce the two-day conference registration fee, including lunch during the general sessions, to just $50. Scholarships will be based upon financial hardship and are being offered on a first-come, first-approved basis to MPA members. Volunteer opportunities are also available in exchange for waived registration fee.
