Butzel grows with addition of Lansing-based attorneys

Attorneys Aaron L. Davis, Garett Koger and Ashley Barrett, recently joined Butzel in the firm’s Lansing office. Davis joins Butzel as a shareholder; Koger is a senior attorney; and, Barrett is Counsel.

Aaron L. Davis

Aaron Davis has significant experience representing employers on all matters impacting their employees under federal and state labor and employment laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). He also has experience representing clients in union representation, labor arbitrations, collective bargaining and litigation before the Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC).

In addition, Davis devotes a portion of his practice to the representation of State of Michigan Non-Exclusively Represented Employees (NERE) through the Michigan State Civil Service appeal process. He has successfully represented clients in front of the Michigan Employment Relations Board and appeals up to the Michigan Civil Service Commission.

He routinely counsels employers on employment disputes and day-to-day employee issues prior to the commencement of litigation. He frequently consults with and trains employers on employment practices and policies, to include the handling of employee separations, workplace investigations, disciplinary matters, wage and hour issues, requests for accommodation and leaves of absence.

Davis is the former Chairperson of the Potter Park Zoological Society Board and currently still serves on the Board. He also serves on the HR Committee for the Capital Region Community Foundation and previously served as the co-chair of the Ingham County Bar Association’s Section of Employment and Labor Law.

Prior to joining Butzel, Davis was a practice department Chairperson (Labor and Employment) and the Vice President of a well-established law firm in Lansing. He also has practiced law with firms located in Chicago, Illinois and Tallahassee, Florida.

Davis has been recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine as a Rising Star in Michigan, Business Litigation (2016-2020).

He earned a J.D. from the University of Illinois-Chicago School of Law and a B.A. in Political Science from Michigan State University.

Garett Koger

Garett Koger has extensive litigation experience which includes service as the chief assistant prosecutor for Clinton County, Michigan, and as an assistant attorney general for the State of Michigan. He litigates in both the state and federal courts, including through appeal.

Koger counsels candidates on election and campaign matters and encourages a proactive approach to statutory compliance to ensure smooth access to the ballot. Should the need for litigation arise on a campaign matter, Koger is comfortable with what is often the fast-paced nature of election law litigation. His experience includes representing multiple candidates up through the Michigan Supreme Court.

He is admitted to practice in Michigan, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Western District of Michigan, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

Koger is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Republican National Lawyers Association and Federalist Society.

Prior to his career as a lawyer, Koger served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2002 to 2007. He’s a graduate of The Military College of South Carolina (“The Citadel”). He earned a J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law.

Ashley Barrett

Ashley Barrett has 20 years of experience in the political arena. As an attorney, Barrett serves as counsel to Candidate Committees, Ballot Committees, PACs, and SuperPACs, lobbyists and lobbying agents, and represents clients in election law litigation matters. Barrett is skilled in the formation of corporate political entities and ensuring statutory compliance in the management of corporate accounts.

Barrett is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, and Federalist Society. She earned a J.D. from Michigan State University of Law and a B.A. from Western Michigan University.
