Forty-six Wayne Law students took the oath to practice as student-attorneys on Thursday, August 31, 2023. These students serve clients in the Detroit area community under the supervision of clinical faculty in Wayne State Law School’s Clinical Education Program. Returning to join the students in this momentous occasion were keynote speaker McKenna Thayer ’22 and Judge Elizabeth Gleicher ‘79. Thayer currently clerks for the Honorable Janet T. Neff in the Western District of Michigan. Judge Gleicher is the Chief Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals and administered the Lawyer’s Oath.
Students will participate in one of six clinics this fall:
• Appeal and Post-Conviction Advocacy Clinic
• Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic
• Business and Community Law Clinic
• Community Advocacy Clinic – Policing Practices
• Disability Law Clinic
• Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic
Students work on real cases for clients who otherwise might not have legal assistance. As both Thayer and Judge Gleicher noted in their comments, the work the students will do can be lifechanging for clients.
