Jason Canvasser is a member at Clark Hill PLC where he focuses his practice on handling complex commercial cases, contractual disputes, and issues relating to creditor’s rights. In addition, he routinely advises clients throughout the country on issues relating to the licensing and regulatory compliance involved in the sale of alcohol.
Canvasser also serves as a member of the City of Birmingham’s Board of Zoning Appeals, sits on the Board of Directors for the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Directors for Angels of Hope.
Canvasser is a resident of Birmingham where he resides with his wife and three children. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State Law School. .
What would surprise people about your job? How much time I spend talking on the phone.
Why did you become a lawyer? I’ve always found the law fascinating, but if you ask my mom, it’s because I always liked arguing my point.
What’s your favorite law-related TV show, movie, and/or book? My Cousin Vinny.
Who are your law role models? I’ve had the honor and privilege of working with so many amazing attorneys. It’s impossible to name just one.
If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? Any one of my kids.
What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Take a year off before going to law school. Be carefree and enjoy the world!
What’s your proudest moment as a lawyer? Winning my first trial. It was a complex case that involved fraudulent telephone calls. We successfully defended our client from all of the fraud charges.
What do you do to relax? Go for a long walk and listen to music.
What other career path might you have chosen? I always wanted to be a doctor or a real estate developer.
What would you say to your 16-year-old self? Don’t forget to live in the moment.
Favorite app: Spotify.
Favorite music: I listen to everything from rock n’ roll to old school rap.
What is your happiest childhood memory? Spending holiday breaks on the beach in Florida with my grandparents.
What is your most treasured material possession? An autographed homerun ball from George Bell of the Chicago White Sox’s that I caught at Tiger Stadium when I was 8 years old.
What do you wish someone would invent? A time machine.
What has been your favorite year so far and why? 2023. I always try to make the current year better than the previous year.
What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? Alaska
If you could have one super power, what would it be? Teleportation.
What’s one thing you would like to learn to do? Play golf better.
What is something most people don't know about you? I love to cook.
If you could have dinner with three people, past or present, who would they be? Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Babe Ruth.
What’s the best advice you ever received? Treat everyone with respect.
Favorite place to spend money: On any sporting event.
What is your motto? To whom much is given, much is expected.
Which living person do you most admire? My wife. I have no idea how she works, raises 3 kids and a puppy, and puts up with me.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement? Being a dad.
What is the most unusual thing you have done? Bungyjumped.
