Ingham County and Cooley Law School 60+ Elderlaw Clinic bring Estate Planning Seminars to seniors; more are planned

The Ingham County Treasurer’s Office has hosted a series of Estate Planning Seminars throughout Ingham County with more events planned. Register of Deeds Derrick Quinney, Ingham County Probate Court Chief Register Ryan Buck, and attorney Dustin Foster of the Cooley 60+ Elderlaw Clinic have all presented estate planning information.

• There is a growing issue in Ingham County properties left in decedents’ names, sometimes for years, with no further action from next of kin, if there is one

• At any time, there are around 200-plus properties with delinquent property taxes that are still in the deceased owner’s name

• This is often due to a lack of familiarity and resources regarding estate planning and the probate process

The group especially wants to reach seniors on fixed-incomes that may not have access to this information.

• Seminars were held 8/16 at the Allen Neighborhood Center; on 9/22 partnering with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the Mayflower Congregational Church, and 9/28 at the Ingham County Fairgrounds. More seminars are planned.
