Michigan Trial Lawyers announces Judicial Endorsements

The Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) Executive Board voted in January 2024 to endorse Kimberly Ann Thomas and Kyra Harris Bolden for the Michigan Supreme Court. MAJ President Jennifer McManus made the announcement.

“MAJ is pleased to endorse Kimberly Ann Thomas and Kyra Harris Bolden – two highly accomplished, well-qualified at-torneys who are committed to ensuring a fair and effective justice system in Michigan,” McManus said.
“Kimberly is an award-winning appellate attorney and leader in youth justice and criminal sentencing law, and we know she is the right candidate for the job. Kyra has done phenomenal work on the bench over the past year, and we would be thrilled to see her continue to serve the state. We know Kimberly and Kyra will advocate for the preservation of the right to a trial by jury and ensure those harmed by the misconduct or negligence of others have their day in court.”

Bolden is seeking reelection to one of two eight-year Michigan Supreme Court seats, with her current term ending January 2025. Thomas is seeking one of two eight-year Supreme Court seats.

Kimberly Ann Thomas is a clinical professor of law and the director and co-founder of the Juvenile Justice Clinic at Michigan Law. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appointed Thomas to the Michigan Task Force on Juvenile Justice Reform in 2021-2022. In 2017, Thomas served as a US Fulbright Scholar at the University College Cork School of Law in Cork, Ireland. In 2013, Thomas was among several attorneys honored with the Justice for All award from the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan in recognition for their training and pro bono support following the 2012 US Supreme Court decision in Miller v. Alabama. Before joining the Michigan Law School faculty in 2003, Thomas served as a trial attorney with Defender Association of Philadelphia.

Justice Kyra Harris Bolden joined the Michigan Supreme Court on January 1, 2023, when she was appointed by Governor Whitmer, making her the first Black woman to serve as a Justice. Prior to her time on the Michigan Supreme Court, Bolden served two terms representing Michigan’s 35th House District. After receiving her Juris Doctorate, Bolden became a civil litigation attorney. She is also an active member of her community, serving as a member of the National Congress of Black Women-Oakland County, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and as a commissioner of the Total Living Commission for the city of Southfield.
