Jackson receives state grant to demolish industrial building destroyed by fire

A blighted and fire-ravaged building will be cleaned up thanks to the intervention of local government in Jackson County. A $3 million grant from the State of Michigan is being awarded to the Jackson County Land Bank to assist in the demolition and cleanup of a large industrial complex on W. North Street that was destroyed by fire.

On Aug. 22, 2023, fire departments from across Jackson County responded to a massive fire at the vacant industrial complex at the corner of W. North Street and Hamilton Street in the City of Jackson. The fire destroyed the majority of the complex’s buildings and the property was condemned by the City.

Funds to demolish the fire-damaged portions of the complex are coming from the State Land Bank Authority’s Blight Elimination Program. The Jackson County Land Bank applied for the grant, with the City of Jackson managing the demolition and removal. Three million dollars will be used to remove the fire-damaged sections of the complex and clean up the site, which has been found to be contaminated with asbestos.

City Manager Jonathan Greene thanks Jackson County for this collaboration to remove a dangerous building. “When there’s a fire on private property like this, it’s the responsibility of property owner to clean it up first. However, given this property’s negative impact on Jackson, it was important for local government to work together to remove this eyesore and environmental concern for the safety of the community,” Greene said.

There is currently no timeline set for when demolition will begin. City staff are now making plans to start the various agreements needed to work at the site, along with engaging contractors to do the removal.
