Public Safety Millage
Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette held a press conference September 19 at the Jackson County jail on Chanter Road, to discuss replacing a 20-year public safety millage that expired in 2022, resulting in using the rainy day fund to keep the doors open and pay operating bills. The millage request replaces operations cost only, it will not be used to build a new jail. It would generate $1.5 million in the first calendar year to operate the Chanter Road facility and pay for overtime. If voters reject the proposal in November it would result in a roughly $1 million deficit, fewer law enforcement services for some municipalities, and overcrowded county jails.
