Judges support ‘Read for Joy’ program

Judge Kameshia Gant of the 6th Circuit Court reads to students at Douglass Academy in Detroit.

Among those taking part in the ‘Read for Joy’ program were BCDI President Monica Thompson, Judge Austin Garrett of the 36th District Court, Judge Kristina Garrett of the Michigan Court of Appeals, Judge Noah P. Hood of the Michigan Court of Appeals, and Judge Karen Braxton of the 3rd Circuit Court.

Located in the heart of Detroit, BCDI Detroit is a non-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing communities and igniting movements for the health, safety, and well-being of black children and families.

In April this year, Michigan district, circuit, and the appellate Judges Cynthia Stephens, Kwame Rowe, Austin Garrett, Noah Hood, Rebecca Coleman, and Kameshia Gant participated in BCDI Detroit Read for Joy virtual program.

On October 4, even more judges showed their support by attending the fall BCDI Detroit reception held at Shops on Top in the Eastern Market. The BCDI Detroit is an affiliate of National Black Child Development, the nation leading voice for black children that proudly works towards creating a world that recognizes and benefits from their strengths.

Judge Austin Garrett of the 36th District Court and Judge Kameshia Gant also had an opportunity to read in person to students at Douglass Academy in Detroit.

“Reading allows children to see, explore, and create worlds beyond their own but, also, better understand our world,” said Garrett. “Read for Joy does this world a service through encouraging reading and literacy because when you open a book, you open infinite possibilities for your world and beyond.”

As BCDI Detroit prepares to expand Read for Joy in 2025 with in-person readings at local libraries, it will continue to focus on eight essential outcomes: Ensuring children are born at a healthy weight, attending schools that affirm them, enjoying nutritious meals, navigating a safe digital environment, seeing themselves represented in media, breathing clean air, being seen as children, and living in safe communities.
