Washtenaw County announces recipients of 2024 Historic Preservation awards

Awards celebrate work accomplished by Washtenaw County
residents and advocates supporting historic preservation

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI —The Washtenaw County Historic District Commission is pleased to announce the recipients of four Washtenaw County Preservation Awards.

Outstanding Organization or Individual


The Outstanding Organization or Individual award is intended to recognize activities and achievements by historic preservation organizations or individual(s) who promote historic preservation throughout Washtenaw County.

This year’s recipients are C. Edward Wall and Mary Ellen Wall. C. Edward and Mary Ellen have been instrumental in preservation efforts within Pittsfield Township and across the county.

They have recently published a new book titled “Mallets Creek Settlement 1824-1825.”

Outstanding Business


The Outstanding Business award is granted to a business that operates within Washtenaw County to recognize their outstanding achievements and excellence in protecting and preserving local cultural and historic resources.

This year’s recipient is 24 Oaks LLC for their work spearheading the efforts to nominate the newest Local Historic District, Wild-Frey Farm. 24 Oaks LLC is owned and operated by Melissa Milton-Pung, who is a Scio Township resident, President of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, an Historic Preservation Expert, and a Program Manager for the Michigan Municipal League.

Outstanding Local Historic District Owner


The Outstanding Local Historic District Owner award is intended to recognize owners of Washtenaw County Local Historic Districts who achieve excellence in preservation activities on their property.

The 2024 award is presented to the Salem Area Historical Society, owners of the Jarvis Stone School Local Historic District. The Salem Area Historical Society recently completed a multi-year project to research, design, fundraise, install, and dedicate a Historical Marker Plaza at the Jarvis Stone School. The plaza features a plaque, replica Tower of the former School Bell, a flagpole, and two stone benches.

Outstanding Realtor


The Outstanding Realtor award is presented to a realtor who goes above and beyond to promote historic district properties and communicates openly and enthusiastically about local historic designation benefits.

This year’s recipient is Patrick McCauley of Reinhart Realtors. Patrick is the coauthor of Historic Ann Arbor: An architectural Guide (2014) and an experienced Realtor who skillfully evaluates historic properties, advises an appropriate pricing strategy, markets historic sites, and facilitates communication between prospective buyers and the Historic District Commission staff. He recently facilitated the sale of multiple local historic districts.
