Whiteout Conditions Blamed For 15-Car Wreck and Shutdown on I-196 Monday

A seven-mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 196 between Zeeland and Hudsonville was shut down for nearly four hours Monday after a multi-vehicle crash caused by a lake effect snowstorm.

Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies and Zeeland Township Fire/Rescue were dispatched to the crash at mile marker 59 on I-196 shortly after 11:30 a.m. When crews arrived, they found that 15 cars were involved in the crash, and several others went into the ditch to avoid the pileup.

“The crash was caused by blowing snow and whiteout conditions with near-zero visibility,” Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

A 55-year-old Freeport man was injured when his pickup truck slid underneath a semi truck. The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Wildfong said. Two other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries that did not require hospitalization, Wildfong said.

The crash completely blocked traffic on eastbound I-196, forcing authorities to shut down the expressway between Exit 55 in Zeeland Township and Exit 62 in Hudsonville. The expressway reopened shortly after 3:30 p.m., Wildfong said.
