Chix Boys Fall to Unity In First-Place Showdown
The Zeeland East varsity boys basketball team entered last Friday’s home game against Unity Christian with a chance to move into a first-place tie with the Crusaders atop the O-K Black Conference by winning.
It didn’t take long for the visitors to squelch those hopes.
Unity Christian held the Chix scoreless for more than five minutes to start the game while hitting four 3-point shots to jump out to a 12-0 lead. East never recovered as the Crusaders rolled to a 58-39 victory, opening up a two-game lead in the conference standings.
Will Ver Steeg led the Chix with 13 points while fellow senior BJ Walker added 11.
Zeeland Boys Swimmers Edge HC By One

The Zeeland 400-yard freestyle relay team of Owen Stevens, Hudson Kosten, Eli Elders and Gibson Meyering won that final event by more than seven seconds in a time of 3:18.74, propelling Zeeland to a 92-91 victory.
Meyering, who swam the anchor leg in the 400 free, also won two individual events against the Maroons, taking the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.36) and the 100-yard butterfly (:54.22). He also teamed up with Carson Durham, Elders and Kosten to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.84.
Stevens won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:33.94 and the 200 individual medley in 1:53.44.
Unity Christian avenged an earlier loss to Zeeland East in varsity girls basketball play last Friday as the Crusaders posted a 62-48 road victory.
The Chix, who defeated Unity Christian 44-32 on Jan. 3, held a 19-17 lead early in the second quarter. However, the Crusaders went on a 10-2 run to take a 27-21 lead shortly before halftime, and Unity Christian would never trail again.
