A longtime educator and former student at Zeeland Christian School will take the reins of leadership for the school starting this summer.

Current ZCS elementary principal Betsy Koop will become its next head of school effective July 1.

“I am thrilled to lead Zeeland Christian into its next chapter,” Koop said. “This school’s legacy has shaped my faith and journey, and I am honored to work with our outstanding staff and families to continue carrying out the motto of ‘Love God. Love Kids. Love Learning.’”

Koop’s appointment followed a nationwide search by ZCS in partnership with the Center for the Advancement of Christian Education. The position became available last year when the previous head of school, Tim McAboy, accepted a similar position in Ohio.

Koop has been with ZCS for 15 years, starting as a Spanish immersion instructional specialist. She later became an elementary teacher, board president and elementary principal. Before coming to ZCS, she taught in Central America for two years.

“In the last six months, I’ve seen firsthand Betsy’s abilities as a highly talented Christian educator with many demonstrated leadership talents,” said Tom DeJonge, retired superintendent of Grand Rapids Christian Schools, who has been serving as interim head of school at ZCS for the past year. “Her wide-ranging experience and tremendous commitment to ensuring educational excellence for ZCS students uniquely equip her for this role.”

Koop’s appointment as head of school comes as ZCS marks its 110th year of educating students and prepares to launch a comprehensive five-year strategic plan.

Koop holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and Spanish from Hope College and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a focus on second languages and cultures education from the University of Minnesota.
