After more than 20 years as the junior varsity football coach at Zeeland West High School, Jeff Bolhouse has gotten a promotion.

Bolhouse was named Monday as the Dux new varsity coach, replacing John Shillito, who announced his retirement in January. Shillito had been the only head coach at West since its varsity program started in 2005.

“Jeff has a wealth of knowledge and experience in educational athletics, and it was clear throughout the process that he is committed to upholding and advancing the high standards of Zeeland West football,” Athletic Director Jordan Bandstra said.

“With over 20 years as our JV football coach, Coach Bolhouse has played a vital role in building our program’s strong foundation.”

Under Shillito’s leadership, the Dux posted a record of 185-46, a winning percentage of .801, made the state playoffs 18 times and had just one losing season. West won five state championships, including the Division 3 title last Nov. 29 when the Dux defeated Detroit Martin Luther King 42-22 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Bolhouse said he was “excited and honored” to be taking over the varsity program at West.

“Having had three boys go through and experience the success of Zeeland West football, I look forward to continuing to provide positive experiences for our current and future players,” Bolhouse said. “I value the opportunity to continue working alongside the ZW coaching staff, administration, and parents to collaboratively build success for our program.”
