A Zeeland manufacturer is in the midst of an expansion that company officials say will help them take on more and larger projects.

Extol Inc. is building an 18,900-square-foot addition to its facility at 651 Case Karsten Dr., a project that’s expected to be completed this spring. It’s the first facility expansion in the company’s more than 30-year history, chief financial officer Bryan Knott said.

Extol is investing about $1.97 million into the project. The Zeeland City Council on Feb. 17 unanimously approved granting the company a 12-year, 50 percent industrial facilities tax break on the project.

“The company serves a diverse set of industries, and their project is essential for their growth in attracting larger projects and new customers,” said Ryan Ferrier, a business solutions manager for Lakeshore Advantage, which assisted Extol in submitting the tax abatement request to the city.

Extol plans to create at least 10 new jobs over the next two years as a result of the project. The company currently employs 104 workers, Knott said.

“I’m glad to see that you’re expecting some additional jobs with the expansion.” Councilman Glenn Kass said. “There’s a number of times where expansion is just to make more machines do work. I’m glad to see that you will be providing employment opportunities for local individuals.”

Extol designs and manufactures both custom and standard automation equipment for the plastic joining industry. Among the business sectors the company serves include automotive, life sciences and energy storage, Knott said.

Extol has a program where its employees get one week paid time off a year to volunteer, either through a mission trip or helping a local organization.

“We have nine team members that are part of Kids Hope. Every Wednesday they volunteer at Roosevelt (Elementary School) and mentor a kid,” Knott said.

Other area organizations Extol employees have served through its Significant Impact program include Habitat For Humanity, Community Action House, Meals on Wheels and Hand2Hand, Knott said.
