Mona Shores hockey recently faced off against East Kentwood for the Sailors’ Sixth Annual Cancer Awareness Game.

Nathan Tilden and the Sailors cruised to an 8-0 win over the Falcons. Tilden tallied a hat trick on the night, earning the game’s opening two goals, and its last goal.

“Felt pretty good to complete it with my team, so it’s a pretty good experience,” Tilden said about his three-goal night. “I’m happy, out of all the nights, this night for the cancer awareness night, we played like we did. I’m very proud of my team and myself that we could do that today.”

The Sailors built a 6-0 first-period lead as Brady Tilden, Cullen Contrad, Vaire Vanderwalle, and Eli Habetler each scored goals. Brandon Austin opened the second period with a goal of his own.

Habetler finished with three assists while Brady Tilden and Vanderwalle each had assists in multi-point nights for the Sailors.

Joey Griffes-Castonia posted the shutout win in goal for Mona Shores.

The 38 combined players from the two teams’ rosters each played in honor of people in their lives who have battled cancer.

“It’s a special night to honor those who have beaten this disease and play in memory for those who weren’t as lucky,” said Mona Shores Coach Chris Benedict. “It’s a special night, sombering, but super proud of these guys for going out and raising awareness. May not be something they realize now but one day they’ll look back and (think) you know that was pretty cool.”

The night was headlined by Stand Up For the Cure Muskegon, which hosts an annual stand-up paddleboard event to help raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in its fight against breast cancer.

The night of Mona Shores hockey was successful as the Sailors helped raise $830 for the organization. The funds came from ticket sales at the gate, donated gift baskets and the 50/50 raffle from the night’s contest.

Stand Up For the Cure Muskegon’s annual breast cancer standup paddleboard fundraiser is set for July 26 at Ross Park on Mona Lake. For more information on SUFTCM, visit https://www.suftc.org/.
