Zeeland Record
Two teams from Zeeland Public Schools will compete in the Odyssey of the Mind state finals next weekend.
A team from Cityside Middle School and a fifth-grade team from Quincy Elementary School took first place at an Odyssey of the Mind regional tournament in Rockford last month. They will compete in the state finals March 15.
Meanwhile, a fourth-grade team from Adams Elementary School placed third at the regional competition and a fourth-grade team from Quincy took fourth place.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that has been in existence for more than 40 years, promoting creativity, problem solving, teamwork and collaboration. Students work for months on complex, creative problem-solving challenges that incorporate science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and storytelling. The competition fosters critical thinking, collaboration and perseverance, while at the same time allowing for students’ creativity to shine through.
“Our students poured their hearts into this (regional) competition, and it showed,” said Julie Paterick, ZPS assistant superintendent of early childhood and elementary curriculum. “Odyssey of the Mind isn’t just about winning — it’s about problem-solving, thinking creatively, and working together. Zeeland Public Schools is committed to providing enriching and challenging experiences for all students — opportunities that go above and beyond the curriculum to inspire curiosity, innovation, and a lifelong love of learning.”
The Cityside OM team consists of Madelyn Sherman, Jackson Sherman, Colin Muilenburg, Graham Muilenburg, Laurel Black, Lucy Harvey and Malachi Arens. They are coached by Stephanie Sherman and Derrick Muilenburg.
The Quincy fifth-grade team is comprised of Hadley Nelson, Jovy Edwards, Oscar Gomez, Zeke Pio and Levi Farleigh. Their coaches are Adam and Kristen Farleigh.
The Adams fourth-grade team includes Max Dishnow, Aubrey Garber, Ellie Watkins, Adelynn Yurk, Emma Jones, Easton Lamer and Titus Fantin. They are coached by Teresa Jarzembowski and Nora Hughes.
